I’d Rather be Lucky than Good

I have been hearing this quote for as long as I can remember. I thought that I would dig in and find out more. I wasn't around in 1930 and I'm not a sportsfan. So, I didn't know anything about Lefty, I dig further.

He wasn't saying that he isn't good, he was very good. He was a 5 time world series champion and was inducted into the hall of fame in 1972. He wasn't waiting around to get lucky. He got good and along the way his proficiency paved the way for an amazing amount of luck. That propelled him to his lofty position.

Of course it was long before she was born but he was using the Oprah formula for luck. Luck is that place where preparation meets opportunity.

I got lucky before I got good. I was born to a man who was third generation entrepreneur and a woman who was raised by a man who ran his own business throughout her childhood. That is a different kind of luck. The kind that is often overlooked and not utilized

Is that lucky stroke the reason I am an entrepreneur? Some people think so. I am the second of 5 children and the only one who started a business. I have started dozens of them. So, the answer is no. Potential is just that. All of us have the potential to become entrepreneurs, I am the only one among my siblings who did the preparation and was lucky enough to have early success.

The reason I had early success is because I prepared early. I have told this story in another blog post but it bears repeating. I remember when I was 6 years old, mom took me to the bank because I was already earning money outside of the home. A pretty good quantity of it for a 6 year old.

She wanted me to know about banking, so we opened a bank account. The banker explained to me that they would pay me for putting my money in their bank. I asked him why. He said that they called it interest and they paid it to everyone.

That answer wasn't satisfactory, so when I got home I asked dad. He said that they could afford to pay interest because they were making more than they paid. I didn't quite understand that but decided that I wanted to own a bank someday.

So, I prepared myself and got very lucky along the way. Because my interests were business and investing, from a young age, these were the people I was meeting. We tend to meet people like ourselves.

When you are ready to meet your future mentors, become interested in the topics they teach. The universe will make sure they will be entering your pathway. They are already in your pathway but until you become interested and prepare yourself, you won't be able to see them clearly.
